Countries
Which countries write the most email? The numbers are rougher than you think
One country tops the per-person charts, another tops the totals, and the sources don't agree on either.
Country rankings for email are rare, and the ones that exist mix two different questions: how many people use email, and how much email moves through each country. The answers are not the same list.
Per person: who uses email the most
- Denmark is often quoted at about 98 percent of citizens using email, one of the highest rates reported.
- The Netherlands is quoted around 90 percent. Australia is quoted lower, at about 73 percent, in surveys from a different year.
- Survey definitions differ: "uses email" can mean weekly, monthly or ever. Compare ranks, not decimals.
In total: where the volume is
- Tracking estimates for 2025 put the United States first on total daily email, at roughly ten billion messages.
- Germany and India follow, with estimates in the range of eight billion a day each.
- Large populations and large businesses drive these totals. Per-person use is a different story.
Why China and India look small on the lists
- Both have very large internet populations, but a lot of daily communication happens in messaging apps rather than email.
- Email usage is high in business and government, and lower in consumer chat.
These figures come from market-research estimates and surveys of different years. Use them to see the shape of the picture, not as official statistics.
